Volunteer With Inclusive Ski Touring

Inclusive Ski Touring is volunteer run and always looking for people to help with our tours at Mt Abram and Whaleback Mountains. Are you interested in volunteering? We hope so! Learn more below and apply. If you have any questions please email: info@inclusiveskitouring.com

  • We ask each volunteer to commit to at least 3 tours throughout the season. Volunteers will be on site for the tours for about 4 hours (~7-11 am). When you commit to volunteer with IST you are volunteering a minimum of 12 hours throughout the season.

  • In order to cultivate our inclusive, welcoming environment, we are looking for volunteers who are positive, outgoing, approachable, encouraging, enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and patient.

We expect volunteers to have some touring experience (it does not have to be in the backcountry), be comfortable with their gear, and able to assist others with gear. We strive for volunteers to be comfortable leading a group of 15+ individuals physically, socially and emotionally.

  • Volunteers will be responsible for checking people in to tours, passing out uphill tickets, and running the ski tour at either Mt Abram (Greenwood, ME) or Whaleback (Enfield, NH).

During each tour, leaders will be responsible for the following:

    • check people in

    • ensure attendees have waivers completed

    • assist with gear- during check in and on snow

    • Lead a welcome circle

    • giving a brief introduction to IST

    • Introductions: Name, pronouns, where they’re from, favorite place to ski, touring experience

    • Brief explanation of recommended layering, binding risers, body positioning

    • Discuss resort etiquette

    • Guide the tour uphill at a reasonable, no-drop pace

    • Lead top of mountain break, transition, and descent

    • Ensure there is a sweep

    • Conclude tour reiterating IST is donation based and volunteer run & a thank you for coming out!

  • This year we will have two volunteers minimum per tour.

Lead Volunteer: Our Lead Volunteers will be individuals who have strong leadership skills and have experience running our tours. They will be comfortable talking about Inclusive Ski Touring and our mission, familiar with the touring routes, and running on site logistics. These individuals will be the lead decision makers and communicators with support of the assistant volunteers. If you have never led an IST tour but feel like you’re a good fit? Consider applying to help as an assistant volunteer.

Assistant Volunteer: Our Assistant Volunteers will be responsible for helping the lead volunteers run the tours. This will be everything from helping people decide layers for the day, assisting with check-ins, talking with and encouraging participants throughout the tour, and being the last person up/down the mountain to ensure all participants make it safely.

  • If you are interested in applying, please submit a volunteer application. The application should take approximately 10-15 min.

IST encourages any individual to apply to volunteer. We do not discriminate based on race, color, sex, identity, age, etc. We strive to have diverse volunteers that help to create an inclusive environment and provide representation for everyone in the outdoors.
